Here are some suggestions on things to do if you are visiting North Yorkshire. Listed here are the more active things to do. With the wealth of natural beauty in North Yorkshire, walking will always be one of the most popular activities. You don’t need to follow an established route to be able to enjoy the countryside, but here are a few suggestions nevertheless. There is also a whole page of suggested walks in Nidderdale, complete with downloadable walk leaflets at the Nidderdale AONB site. They even have a Kirkby Malzeard Pub Walk, for those that like to keep their refreshment close at hand!
Distance: 2.3 miles
Summary: Painted by Turner in 1816 (see image) and recently named by Dame Judi Dench as her favourite woodland in the UK (see article), Hackfall is set in a 350ft gorge on the edge of Grewelthorpe. As well as the natural beauty of the views over the Yorkshire Hills, there is something of the enchanted forest about Hackfall, with its grottos and glades, decaying follies and rustic temples created by William Aislabie in the 18th century.

Crackpots Mosaic Trail, Dallowgill
Distance: 3.5 miles
Summary: This enjoyable 12km (6½ miles) trail around part of Dallowgill is illuminated with 22 mosaics depicting local scenes and flora and fauna which might be encountered along the route. The trail was created as part of a community project to celebrate the designation of Nidderdale as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Circular walk from Pateley Bridge
Distance: 8.1 miles
Summary: You can combine some time browsing around the picturesque town of Pateley Bridge with this circular walk of 5.5 miles that starts from the High Street. A Walk from Pateley Bridge (by North Yorkshire County Council) Get Directions (to the High Street) Alternatively, you can try this variation, which is slightly longer, and takes in Brimham Rocks (pictured), with its remarkable rock formations: Pateley Bridge Circular via Brimham Rocks. How Stean Gorge
Distance: 10.1 miles
Summary: How Stean Gorge is a spectacular limestone gorge near Lofthouse in the Yorkshire Dales. This walk of just over 5 miles takes in How Stean Gorge and Middlesmoor. There is also an outdoor activity centre (www.howstean.co.uk) where you can try your hand at gorge scrambling (wetsuits provided), abseiling and other such pursuits. Bicycle hire is also available at this location.
Guided mountain biking tours are available from Niddertrail Biking, led by CTC qualified guides. A few local mountain biking routes are listed below.
Bogs Hall Stables is a teaching stables / riding school with excellent indoor and outdoor facilities. It was founded in 1994 by Ruth and Richard Botham and has built up a solid reputation for high quality teaching, first rate livery services and a friendly and well run yard.

Nidderdale Llamas are based in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales and trek through the beautiful Nidderdale Countryside. Nidderdale Llamas offers a truly unique and personal experience for all abilities. Their llamas are gentle, friendly and great fun. Old Sleningford Farm run a wide variety of courses throughout the year, covering subjects such as Pig Keeping, Forest Gardening, Sausage Making, Curing and Smoking Food, Keeping Chickens for Meat, Bent Willow Chair Making and Preserving the Harvest. Falconry and More
Thorp Perrow Arboretum is one of the finest private collections of trees and shrubs in the country. Along with the magnificent gardens, they have a Bird of Prey and Mammal Centre where you can watch demonstrations with eagles, falcons, hawks, vultures and owls from all five continents of the world. They also offer a wide range of falconry courses, from a few hours to a five day course.

Located just outside Masham, ArtisOn provides an unrivalled choice of short art and craft skills workshops in the Yorkshire Dales. Courses cover anything from painting to stained glass, from blacksmithing to knitting, from ceramics to jewellery-making.

Warren Gill is a secluded valley near Masham. Over the last few years Dave and Ann Elgie have been transforming Warren Gill into a state of the art shooting ground. They have a range of clay pigeon shooting lessons available where you can learn first hand from qualified coaches, in a safe and friendly environment.
